2010 – The Year in Review
Thursday, 27 January 2011

For 2010, HSDC rescued 540 animals-- 399 cats and 141 dogs. The rescues came from municipal kill shelters, volunteer rescues, owner surrenders and animals dumped on the shelter grounds.

In the twelve month period, we adopted out 448 animals - 324 cats and 124 dogs -, a record high for the shelter. This accomplishment is due to the dedication of the staff and the volunteers – socializing at the shelter and working at the LuvAPet or AdoptAPet centers to promote new forever homes. It was also made possible by the amazing increase in foster homes that were available during the year. Many volunteers opened their homes and hearts to the littlest orphans of the metroplex. They took in bottle babies with no moms and little families that needed time to thrive, rescuing over 300 kittens in 2010. There are only 57 of these kittens still looking for their forever homes.

To enhance our capacity to find homes for needy animals, we will continue our Foster Program and enhance this program with Dixon’s Hope, to encourage qualified foster homes for our adult, harder to adopt animals who get overlooked in favor of kittens and puppies.

We also continue our Guest Foster Program. When we do not have space to rescue animals that need help, this program allows us to help rehome a dog or cat by featuring it on our website and at offsite adoption events while the owner or private rescuer provides a home for it.

Please learn the details of these life saving programs – and how you can help save more animals in 2011!
