Ruby was so named because she's a bit of a red head and also because Ruby Slippers help one find their way home. She's about a year old and was found as a stray in Irving. She is quite small weighing about 14 lbs - though in the pictures she may resemble a larger dog. She appears to be some sort of chocolate lab mixed with a very small breed dog.
Ruby was very scared when she came out of the shelter but thanks to some good obedience training she is now fantastic on a leash, knows how to sit on command, knows what "no" means (though does not always respond perfectly) and is affectionate beyond description. Her house-training is progressing along nicely. She knows some fancy tricks she learned from her time on the streets: she's excellent at opening boxes and knows how to open a fast food cup ;-)
She loves to sit on your lap for pets and she loves loves love to have her chest and belly rubbed. If she's over-excited (b/c so happy to see you), a belly rub calms her right down. She also likes being picked up and held.
Ruby is not an alpha dog, she's best when she has another dog whose lead she can follow, so a home with another dog or a human that is home most of the time. Her foster mom said they have been working on overcoming Ruby's shyness around strangers and resulting in her sometimes becoming overly protective of her people (and dogs).
Ruby is not at the shelter but in foster care but if you want to see this precious little girl you can contact us at
to make an appointment to see her.
