Jake is 10 1/2 now, which is "up there" in years for a big dog. I had noticed he was slowing down quite a bit since he found his forever home, so Dustin and I took Jake to the vet a few weeks ago. He got the full "senior workup" including blood and urine tests. Fortunately, his test results came back really good! The vet said his tests look like they are from a five-year old dog.
His slowing down is because he has put on 10 pounds since leaving the shelter, so he is on a diet and he got a prescription for Rimadyl to help his arthritis aches and pains.
So overall, he is doing great. Dustin really loves him dearly. Jake gets to see his mom (me) two or three times a week and I also get to keep him for overnights periodically. So Jake has the best of both worlds for his golden years, which he really, really deserves... :)
