Adoption Procedure

WE DO NOT ADOPT "ON THE SPOT."

As residents of a no-kill shelter, our animals are safe in our care until they find that perfect, permanent forever home. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with our procedure to assure their new home is a perfect fit – for you and for them!

  1. Complete the adoption application and submit it
    • by email,
    • to an adoption counselor at the adoption event,
    • to the shelter or
    • to fax number 214-363-6529 for dogs or 214-220-8548 for cats.
An incomplete application form will delay your application.
  2. Our Adoption Director receives all applications within 24 hours of when you submit them for consideration.
  3. Our Adoption Team reviews all applications and performs the required reference checks.
Again, incomplete or inaccurate data will delay and/or void your application.
  4. Within 48 – 72 hours you will hear from a member of the adoption team to clarify any issues, to approve or to deny your application.
NOTE: approvals on dog adoptions are pending until a home visit can be completed. The timing on this varies with your location and volunteer availability to schedule the home visit.

The animals in our care are adopted at our discretion. We reserve the right to refuse adoption to any applicant.

10 Commandments of Ownership

Adoption Philosophy

Our concern for our animals is that they go to a permanent home where they will be well cared for their ENTIRE life. To accomplish this goal, we try to match each dog and cat to a suitable owner. If we feel you are incompatible with a certain animal you are interested in adopting, we retain the option to deny the application. Dog & Kitty City can refuse to re-home an animal without giving reason and cannot accept responsibility for temperament or behavior of any animal after re-homing, although we will support you with any problems that may arise. The animals are the property of Dog & Kitty City and are re-homed at our discretion. If you cannot keep your new pet for any reason, we expect you to return the animal to Dog & Kitty City.

Adoption Fees

Dogs: Varies depending on breed, size and age

Cats: $100

Adoption fees include all current shots, including rabies, spay/neuter and microchip.

Pet Tips

A word about animal behavior issues.

Basic Care

  • Select a pet wisely, based on your lifestyle, schedule and budget. Keep in mind the animal's expected physical and behavioral characteristics and grooming needs.
  • Remember, you are the caretaker of you pet. When you adopt an animal, you adopt the responsibility of taking care of that animal for its entire life. Your pet loves you and depends on you.

Foster Programs

We have two alternate programs to supplement rescue efforts with our space restrictions: HSDC FOSTER PROGRAM and GUEST FOSTER PROGRAM.

In the HSDC FOSTER PROGRAM, the animals belong to the shelter. Volunteers offer their homes as a temporary spot for the neediest shelter animals. These may be kittens or puppies, a momma with babies, an animal recovering from illness or surgery, a timid animal that needs special socialization or the like.

To participate as a foster parent you need to file an Adoption Application with the shelter. We qualify participants as though we were adopting a pet to a new home, including a home visit for dog fosters. The animal remains the property of the shelter, and the shelter accepts all responsibility for food, supplies and care. Shelter will provide and pay for any necessary medical attention.

Once qualified, a foster parent simply signs the foster contract and picks up their little charge(s) at the shelter. Shelter support is just a phone call away.

The GUEST FOSTER PROGRAM involves the shelter in promoting adoption for animals that are not shelter animals, but belong to the person housing the pets. Participants must sign a contract confirming their compliance with the medical requirements (by law) as well as the conditions for their participation in the program.
